Using Using SCUBA diving, surveying the coral reef communities at four sites, Red Sea Egypt was done. These sites are: Ras El Behar (polluted by petroleum oil), El-Hamraween (impacted by phosphate shipping), Shabrour Umm Gam’ar (harmed by recreational activities and has been suffering from the outbreak of Acanthaster planci during 1998) and Kalawy (a control site). The skeletal growth of the coral Stylophora pistillata was promoted greatly at the expense of other corals, in presence of chronic oil pollution (Ras El-Behar). In contrast, this species was completely suppressed in presence of phosphate and sulphur enrichment. El propósito de esta investigación fue estudiar la contaminación de un ecosistema de manglar impactado con hidrocarburos en el sector centro sur de Cayo Santa María, Jardines del Rey, Cuba. Para el estudio de los indicadores microbiológicos y fisicoquímicos fue diseñado un muestreo estratificado, donde se seleccionaron dos estratos y diez estaciones de muestreo, considerando los patrones de flujos de marea en pleamar y bajamar, así como el impacto perceptible de la contaminación. Los hidrocarburos fueron investigados en el área costera del Litoral Ecuatoriano bajo el proyecto ODEPLAN del INP. La información evaluada corresponde al mes de octubre del 2003. Se programaron un total de 42 sitios para el muestreo de sedimentos de fondo, los cuales fueron demarcados con un GPS (Global Positional System). Las muestras de sedimentos fueron colectadas utilizando draga Van Veen, las mismas que fueron analizadas de acuerdo a la metodología señalada por UNIESCO/COI/PNUMA y leídas por Espectrofluometría. Dans l’objectif de déterminer l’état de la contamination organique et inorganique des sédiments superficiels de la frange côtière du golfe de Gabès, nous avons évalué les concentrations en hydrocarbures aromatiques totaux, en cadmium (Cd), en plomb (Pb) et en mercure (Hg). L’échantillonnage a été effectué à bord d’une barque motorisée, à l’aide d’une benne Van Veen au niveau de 25 stations. The survey of sediment and hydrological parameters in the old harbor of Bizerte has revealed that this ecosystem knows a high anthropogenic pressure. In this area waters were characterized by weak contents in dissolved oxygen and sediments, rich in fine fraction, were loaded in hydrocarbons and in organic matter. The free-living nematodes, predominant taxa, responded to these disturbances by a significant decrease in their densities and their biomasses and had tendency, notably at the most isolated sites, to penetrate deeply to escape surface sediments highly loaded in hydrocarbons and in organic matter. |

In October 16, 1976, the tanker "Bohlen" was wrecked in the Mer d'Iroise, at about 35 miles of Brest, and lossed about 7 000 t of Boscan crude oil. The coast of Brittany was polluted by 3 000 t, and 4000 t were dispersed in the marine environment. In July 1977, 23 surface sediment samples were collected to look for the traces of oil spill in the sea bottom, 9 months after the shipwreck. Hydrocarbons were analyzed in sediments from the Congo River deep-sea fan, from the Congo River, and in sinking particles collected by sediment traps 40 m above the sediment. Studied sites encompassed three lobes of decreasing age of formation along the canyon: sites A, F and C and a another lobe system, disconnected from the active channel since 4 ka, Site E. Terrestrial long-chain odd n-alkanes were dominant in all sediments of the lobe system.
